Each type hires differently and looks for different things on a resume.
Two questions sort almost all of them: do you advise or own the outcome? And do you work with government, or with funders and NGOs?
Advise & influence
Your output is a recommendation
Own & execute
Your output is a program, budget, or policy
Government & public systems
Advise the state
You shape government decisions from outside, through embedded advisory, evidence, or policy research. Change is slow but happens at state or national scale.
Run public systems
You hold the mandate or the money for public programs. Expect heavy process and long timelines.
Philanthropy & civil society
Advise the sector
You build the strategy and evidence that funders and nonprofits act on, usually through short projects across many topics.
Fund & deliver
You run programs or fund them, and you answer for whether they work. This is the work closest to communities.
Left or right?
Left-column roles are about analysing problems and persuading someone else to act. Right-column roles make you responsible for a team, a budget, or a program.
Top or bottom?
Top-row roles need you to understand how government works, from schemes and budgets to the bureaucracy. Bottom-row roles need you to understand how funders and NGOs work.
